In 1985 artist and teacher John Sears was involved in a near-fatal bicycling accident that left him with a severe brain injury. For the next 24 years he continued his work as an artist, learning to compensate for the challenges his disability presented. Unable to return to the classroom, he continued to volunteer his time and talent teaching classes and seminars for Beechwood Rehabilitation Center, St. Mary Medical Center, The Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.
In recognition of his accomplishments and commitment to others, the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania presented him with its Inspiration Award in 2004. The award, which was renamed the John Sears Inspiration Award after his death in 2009, is presented annually to a brain injury survivor who has utilized their talents and strengths to overcome significant challenges.

Held on Saturday, April 13, 2019, the Run, Walk, Roll for Brain Injury supports the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania and Camp Cranium and their work to prevent brain injuries and to improve the quality of life for people who have experienced brain injury. Held in Tyler State Park in Richboro, PA, it's a 5K scenic timed course, and for those who don't run, a healthy 1-mile walk or wheelchair roll.
