Some of you may know that years ago, I had a traumatic brain injury. I was extremely lucky and every day I am thankful for the fact that I am alright. There are so many others that do not have that same outcome, and in the blink of an eye, are confronted with a new life that looks nothing like their old one. How scary and confusing that must be...

Enter the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania. They provide survivors with resources and real one-on-one help and advocate on a state and federal level for better policies regarding brain injury. They fund important research. They connect people. They make things like Camp Cranium a possibility.

Camp Cranium is for kids who are living every day with the effects of a brain injury. At camp, they get to experience climbing a rock wall, going down a zip line, swimming in the pool, participating in a dance night, roasting marshmallows by the fire while singing camp songs, fishing in the pond, and paddling  boats. Every activity at camp is designed so that children at every level of ability, even those who are wheelchair-bound, can participate. You should see the sea of smiles at this camp. Campers form lifelong friendships and bonds. They are surrounded by children who are just like them and who understand them. They achieve their goals. There is a real healing factor in what happens here. Most importantly, they get to just be kids. They are not patients at Camp Cranium- they are just children having fun.

Next month, I will be participating in the Run, Walk, Roll for Brain Injury. The money raised for this event will go towards BIAPA and programs like Camp Cranium. I know everyone has a lot going on, but if you have a few extra dollars and want to impact someone's life in a real and positive way, please do so. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
